Scaling data pipelines often hits a wall when data volume explodes. In this guide, we dive deep into optimizing Delta Live Tables (DLT) on Databricks.

Introduction

Delta Live Tables (DLT) abstracts away much of the complexity of building reliable data pipelines. However, default settings are rarely sufficient for petabyte-scale workloads.

Partitioning Strategies

Choosing the right partition key is critical. A high-cardinality column can lead to the small file problem.

@dlt.table(
  name="iot_sensor_data",
  comment="Raw sensor data partitioned by date",
  partition_cols=["date"]
)
def iot_sensor_data():
  return (
    spark.readStream.format("cloudFiles")
      .option("cloudFiles.format", "json")
      .load("/mnt/raw/iot")
  )

Z-Ordering for Performance

Z-Ordering co-locates related information in the same set of files. This is significantly more effective than partitioning for high-cardinality columns like customer_id.

Benchmark Results

We compared the query latency before and after applying Z-Order optimization on a 10TB dataset. The results showed significant improvements across all quarters, with latency dropping by up to 50% in some cases.
